Phillipines :: Operation Blessing

On November 8, 2013, Typhoon Haiyan, also known as Typhoon Yolanda, bore down on the nation of the Philippines, killing more than 6,000 people and leaving more than 3.6 million people displaced. The storm caused 13-foot storm surges and reached up to 235mph winds, comparable to a Category 4 hurricane in the USA. Typhoon Haiyan is the strongest storm on record, in terms of wind speed, to ever move from water to over land. And, it is the worst natural disaster to hit the Philippines in modern meteorological records.

“Consider the scale of what were are talking about here,” said Orla Fagan, spokeswoman for the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. “We are talking about a number of people equivalent to the population of some entire countries.”

While Haiyan pummeled the Philippines, Don Moen and his band were in the midst of an Asian tour that put them in the heart of the Philippines the day after the storm hit. The Lord made a way for Don and his band to go forward with their concert schedule as planned. The nights of worship could not have come at a better time for those who attended as they brought comfort and hope to a lot of hurting people.

Worship In Action, in response to Typhoon Haiyan put out a call to its partners for emergency donations. Our partners responded generously, and 100% of these donations were placed in the capable hands of Operation Blessing (OB). OB is a non governmental organization Don has personally known for more than 20 years, and it has permanent offices in the Philippines. OB staff and volunteers were immediately present to respond to the disaster. OB used Worship in Action donations, in combination with other donations from all over the world, to set up four relief camps that provided shelter for 160,357 individuals. 12,174 men, women and children received medical treatment by medical mission teams. 138,252 people received bottled water, clothing, food, tents, mats and blankets. 11,391 individuals prayed with OB workers to receive Jesus Christ as their Lord. God is good and he is always present to help in our times of need…through the hands and feet of his people.
